Soft Matter
The aim of the Soft Matter Group is the consolidation of the MLZ in-house research and the exchange and reach-out to other groups and universities. The group focuses on soft matter systems studied with neutron scattering in terms of structure and dynamics, surface and bulk characterisation covering a broad range of length and time scales. Discussions and exchange are the basis of the group connecting the MLZ scientists to other groups at universities and industry. Thus, new collaborations and instrument development evolve. Education is seen as one important tool for attracting the best people to MLZ and establishing best reputation consequently.
The broad range of interest of the group members ranges from classical polymers over green polymers, bio-inspired, and bio-mimetic systems to real biological systems like biomolecules with inhibitors/substrates or in vivo cell water dynamics. Other key aspects correspond to tunable and responding complex fluids, colloidal systems and nano-composites. Special focus is on the constant instrument and sample environment equipment devlopment to serve future needs of the scientific community. Latest developments include food science with a broad interest from science and industry. Here for instance, industrially relevant processes of food emulsion homogenization under high pressure conditions are highly important.
