Sample preparation lab (Neutron Guide Hall)

For the preparation or post-treatment of samples, the MLZ offers a sample preparation laboratory in the Neutron Guide Hall West for users.
This information only gives you some basic guidelines for the use of the MLZ Sample Preparation Lab. However, it should not replace the personal lab introduction given to you either by your instrument responsible or the lab assistant. Have in mind that you work at your own risk, so familiarize with your experiment and the necessary safety rules.

Note: Access to the physics laboratory can only be granted after a safety traning has been performed. Please email to sample preparation laboratory for any questions.

Lab-Equipment
  • Centrifuge

    - Make sure to properly load the rotor before using the centrifuge, to prevent a defect of the device.

In addition to the equipment above, the sample preparation laboratory provides a fridge and a freezer, as well as common used solvents and glassware (i.e. beakers, measuring cylinders, sample bottles, screw cap bottles), syringes, pipettes and an Argon and compressed air supply.
Additionally you can use the official proposal form to point out your special requirements, so that your local contact and the sample environmental group can prepare appropriate conditions for your experiment in time.

Chemicals

You will find common used solvents (i.e. Aceton, 2-Propanol, Ethanol) as well as chemicals in the sample preparation lab. Here is an overview of the chemical inventory list.

Always check in advance with the lab responsible.

Laboratory Safety Rules

Only users with expertise and experience are allowed to use the sample preparation lab.

Lab coats and white safety shoes, as well as long trousers must be worn at all times; safety glasses and nitrile gloves are available in the lab. Be aware that disposable gloves are only meant as temporary protection against splashes. For the handling of highly aggressive chemicals, special gloves must be worn – make sure to choose the right material.
If special safety equipment is needed, please inform the lab responsible in time.

The fume hood in the sample preparation lab protects you from inhaling hazardous gases, fumes and vapours as well as shielding you from possible chemical reactions or flying glass splinters.
Please check that the fume hood is operating correctly before starting work.
Always keep the sash as low as possible, don’t put your head inside the hood and use the sash as a safety shield.
Ensure to close the sash, after finishing work.

A clean and tidy workspace ensures safe working. Please use the ‘laboratory space occupation sheet’ to label your workspace.

Working alone in the lab outside the normal working hours (Mo-Fr 09:00 – 17:00) is only possible after checking with the lab responsible or your local contact.

Hazardous materials

Please inform the lab responsibles, if you bring hazardous chemicals into the lab. A material safety data sheet (MSDS) is also required.
Working with ‘Piranha acid’ and hydrofluoric acid is prohibited in the lab, as well as bringing in radioactive material.
Please label all of your samples with your name, date and content.

Hazardous materials

The material safety data sheet (MSDS) supplies you with important data about:
- Possible hazards
- Composition/information on ingredients
- First aid measures
- Firefighting measures
- Handling, storage and transport
- Physical and chemical properties
- Toxicological, ecological information
- Disposal consideration.

Disposal of waste
You can find different waste containers for disposal in the lab:
  • Liquid waste: mineral basics (pH>7)
  • Liquid waste: mineral acids (pH<7)
  • Liquid waste: non-halogenated organic solvents
  • Liquid waste: halogenated organic solvents
  • Solid waste: combustible (i.e. paper, gloves, plastic)
  • Solid waste: non-combustible (i.e. metals, aluminiumfoil, cans).

In case of emergency

Before starting work, please familiarize with the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment: body shower, eye shower, first aid kit as well as the rescue plan and the emergency evacuation plan.
Every injury must be communicated to the radiation protection.
