The 2025 Annual Scientific Report explores how smartphone camera sensors are used to study antimatter and how additive manufacturing is helping to dispose of space debris. In addition to these highlights, the report provides insights into more than 20 other publications that were produced using neutrons or positrons and involved MLZ scientists. A review of events and the statistics for the year 2025 are also included.

The scientific highlights of 2024 range from small iron scavangers in the sea that bind carbon dioxide to new joints for oil pipelines and Nobel Prize-winning quantum measurements with neutrons. In addition to the twelve highlights, the report offers an insight into several dozen publications, the latest research results of the fuel conversion and, of course, all the events of the past year.

Scientific highlights of 2023 are: approaching the dream of nuclear fusion with positrons, analyzing potential rocks for CO2 storage and researching an alternative to cow’s milk, such as milk from sugar beet leaves. The annual report provides general facts and figures as well as information on the conversion of the FRM II to low-enriched uranium (LEU) and the latest instrument updates.

No neutrons – no research? On the contrary: The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum has published many scientific results also in 2022. Scientists at the MLZ are making their instruments fit for the future. The scientific annual report highlights the research results and provides facts and figures from the past year.

How new solid-state batteries deliver more energy, how a new technology enables better photovoltaic systems, how mRNA is transported and released when administered into the bloodstream, and what the future of electronic devices will look like with so-called “two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials” are topics of this year’s Scientific Highlights. In addition to the science, the annual report offers facts and figures about the MLZ and the FRM II.

Next-generation lithium-ion batteries, the early development of the solar system, biopolymers from wood as an alternative to fossil resources and research into molecular mechanisms of aggressive diseases such as multiple sclerosis are topics of this year’s Scientific Highlights. In addition to the science, the annual report offers facts and figures about the MLZ and the FRM II.
