I arrived! And what have I to do now?
When arriving at the FRM II, please visit the reception. There you will be provided with your access badge and a blue folder. In case the reception is already closed, you will be provided with those items by the security guards at the gate.
Within the blue folder you will find some information regarding the stay at the MLZ and a process slip. Your badge is issued for the period given on this process slip. In case you have to change it, please ask your local contact.
Your first station will be the office of the radition protection department. They check if you have a valid safety instruction. In case any of your samples have to be registered with the radiation protection department, this will be done now.
Opening hours: Mo-Th 08:00-16:00, Fr 08:00-13:00
Please note: The User Office meets new users at the reception Monday till Friday at 08:30 in the morning and accompanies them to the Radiation Protection Office. In case you can’t/ won’t participate in this appointment, please discuss this with your local contact!
When leaving the site, you have to check-out at the radiation protection office (don’t forget to make an appointment for any release measurements!), give back your badge (either at the reception, or – if closed – at the gate) and the process slip. Please don’t forget to collect the requested signatures and please don’t forget to sign that you received the beam time.
- You like to go for a run? Just visit the User Office – there is somebody who knows the length of all possible tracks around here!
- Unfortunately, there is no pool at Garching but there is a new pool at Ismaning – the web site is only in German but please don’t hesitate to contact us in case you need any translation! Furthermore there are some pools at Munich!
- Furthermore there is a lake at Garching, situated in the northwest of the city. In summer, it’s worth a visit!
- Information about Munich can be found on the city’s official visitors’ web site.
Feel free to ask for tipps at the User Office!
On their web pages, the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund GmbH (MVV, municipal transportation service) offers everything around public transportation at Munich and surrounds: timetables, tariffs and network maps.
There is an app (Android/ IPhone) designed by the MVV. Please find all details on their web page.
Reachable by the underground line U6, MLZ is part of the MVV-network. The terminal stop of the underground line U6, “Garching-Forschungszentrum”, is located only a few steps away from the FRM II’s gate. It operates at 10- or 20-minutes intervals. By taking the U6 you can go to “Marienplatz” (that is Munich’s city centre with the famous town hall) in not quite half an hour. The stops “Garching” and “Garching-Hochbrück” are about 3 to 5 minutes away.

Please go down to the basement of the central station where the “S-Bahn” (= suburbian train) operates. Take one to “Marienplatz” (two stops). There you can change to the underground line U6 with the destination “Garching-Forschungszentrum”.
Please note: Be sure to take a train with this destination on it, because there are relief trains only to “Fröttmaning” or “Münchner Freiheit”!
Alltogether you will need around half an hour (pure journey time).

There are two possibilities.- You take the S-Bahn (=suburbian train) no. 1 to the stop “Neufahrn” and change there for the bus no. 690 to “Garching-Forschungszentrum”. Leave the bus at the terminal stop.
- You take the S-Bahn (=suburbian train) no. 8 to the stop “Ismaning” and change there for the bus no. 230 to “Garching-Forschungszentrum”. Leave the bus at the terminal stop.
For the Mensa*(= canteen) and the *StuCafé you will need a special card for payment.
To get the Legic-Card you have to pay 12€ (7€ deposit, 5€ credit)

Galileo
Next to the MLZ is the Galileo building. Besides the hotels (Stellaris & Courtyard) there are also some restaurants and bars. As the complex is opened not long ago there will be some more restaurants etc. in the future. Just look out when you are on-site!
