Instruments at the MLZ

Due to the renovation of the cold source, there will be no cold neutrons before 2027. Thus, all instruments focussed on cold neutrons await modified flux. In the table below, these instruments are in bold. On their detailed pages, you will find information on their technical data WITHOUT the cold source as well as WITH the cold source. Deviating parameters are again in bold.

All instruments always using thermal or hot neutrons for experiments remain unaffected!

The instruments at the MLZ are operated by our cooperation partners, the Technische Universität München (TUM), Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (FZJ) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon (Hereon), together with the Max-Planck-Society (MPG). These partners, together with associated groups from German universities, are continuously working to improve the performance of the instruments. The result is a suite of world-class instruments available for the benefit of scientific users worldwide.

The instrument scientists are supported by an array of service teams for the sample environments, neutron optics, detectors, instrument control systems and software as well as the user office. In addition, several laboratories specialising in sample preparation and characterisation are available to serve the special scientific requirements of the users.

Especially the transmission electron microscope TEM and the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system may be booked in combination with neutron experiment proposals for transmission electron microscopy and fabrication of high-quality thin films, respectively.
