Pioneered by the Nobel Prize winning work from Bertram N. Brockhouse and Clifford G. Shull, neutron scattering has become an indispensable technique for the microscopic probe of magnetic order and excitations in magnetic materials, strongly correlated electron systems and unconventional superconductors. This in turn has helped to drive the developments in information technology in recent decades. Unsurprisingly, magnetism research with neutrons also represents one of the most active research fields at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ).

The field of magnetism research is developing rapidly, resulting in an increasing number of new fields of research. Therefore, the Quantum Phenomena group of MLZ organized a conference in Lenggries from the 4th to the 7th of June 2019. Forty-five international participants met in this nice valley in upper Bavaria, right below the Brauneck. The conference about “Neutrons for information and quantum technologies” covered a wide range of emerging topics in magnetism that are expected to bear very high relevance to the advances of future information and quantum technologies. The 23 talks given by world- renowned speakers ranged from spin caloritronics, molecular magnetism, 2D magnetic van der Waals materials, and dynamics of magnetic textures.

A conference in the middle of the Alpine foothills is literally screaming for a hiking trip. So, the participants visited the Stie-Alm, where they enjoyed the picturesque landscape of the wild mountains as well as a typical Bavarian “Brotzeit”.
