The district administrator of the district of Munich recently paid a visit to the FRM II. Christoph Göbel accompanied by executives of the district office went to the reactor pool, into the experimental hall and took a look into the neutron guide hall. He was enthusiastic about the “largest research institution in the district of Munich”, as scientific director Prof. Dr. med. Winfried Petry presented the FRM II.

At the invitation of the three directors of the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) of the Technical University of Munich, District Administrator Göbel came to Garching in January. After an introductory presentation, Technical Director Anton Kastenmüller, Administrative Director Johannes Nußbickel and Prof. Winfried Petry took the visitors on a tour to the facility. To be on it were among others Martina Neubauer, Head of Unit “Equal Opportunities and Social Potentials”, Walter Schuster, Business Unit Manager “Construction, Security, Municipal, Consumer and Environmental Protection, Veterinary Office, Advisory Committee”, Alexander Mayer, Project Manager Water Management and Katja Rösler, Head of the unit “Environmental Protection”. The most interesting for the guests was from which areas scientists come to measure to the neutron source. During the tour Professor Petry provided illustrative examples of research about antibiotic resistance to turbine blade tensions and research on lithium batteries. Thus, the guests also learned that the international researchers have to make an application for beamtime, which is initially checked by external experts. When they publish their results, the measurement will be free for them. Industrial customers have to pay if they want to receive the results exclusively.

Although time was running out at the end, everyone found that the visit was worth it. “I am deeply impressed how broad the range of research and test fields here in the neutron source is and what an important research center the” Garching Reactor “is for scientists from all over the world,” Göbel commented his impressions.
