In the beginning of October Prof. Dr. Peter Müller-Buschbaum and Dr. Anton Kastenmüller the directors of MLZ and FRM II respectively, had the great pleasure to receive their American colleague, Dr. Thiyaga P. Thiyagarajan.
Thiyagarajan is a program manager in charge of two neutron scattering programs at the Office of Basic Energy Sciences within the Department of Energy (DoE) Office of Science, and thus in close touch with the American neutron scattering facilities, HFIR and SNS at ORNL. He also engages in funding research enabled by neutron scattering at US universities and national Labs.
During his visit to FRM II and MLZ he expressed his interest in operations management, including fuel conversion, and science. MLZ scientists and colleagues from the TUM physics department gave insight into their specific research areas: quantum materials, soft matter research and energy as well as technical aspects like instrument development, detector development and neutron guide production. Furthermore, the big topic of data management was addressed as well as concepts for future neutron sources. Dr. Thiyagarajan appreciated the informative tour through the facility and was very impressed by the wide range of instruments, capabilities and the breadth of the scientific activities at FRM II.
