Production of potable water using reverse osmosis technique – in-situ small-angle neutron scattering studies

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a major technology of gaining potable water by desalination and recovery of see water and wastewater. A sever problem is scaling and biofouling of the membranes. In particular the formation of calcium phosphate has strong negative influence on membrane permeability. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) along with the technique of contrast variation is a strong tool in this field as it is a non-destructive technique allowing quantitative analysis on microscopic scale and distinction between organic and inorganic components.
I will present SANS studies obtained from several relevant parts of the RO device: (i) Characterization of aggregates initiated by organic molecules in the feed of a model secondary effluent, (ii) characterization of thin-film composite RO-membranes using SANS contrast variation, and (iii) in-situ desalination experiments under realistic conditions of wastewater desalination performed in a specially developed cell. The experiments were/are performed at the classical and focusing SANS and VSANS instruments KWS1 and KWS3 of the FRM II.
