Open Day and Maustag (Public event)

Open Day and Maustag This year, there is even more to experience on 3 October! Alongside the Maustag and guided tours for adults at the FRM II, the Open Day at the Galileo building offers a wide range of exciting activities. Without giving away too much: Our hands-on exhibits include a LEGO model, a VR headset, throwing games, a cloud chamber that makes natural radiation visible, and radiation detectors with interactive exhibits where you can take your own measurements.

*You can register for a Maus Tag or adult tour at the FRM II "here":https://indico.frm2.tum.de/event/645/ .*

*Find all the information about the campus-wide Open Day "here":https://forschungscampus-garching.de/ .*

The easiest way to reach us is by taking the U6 to "Garching-Forschungszentrum" - the venue is just a short walk from the terminus.

Want a sneak peek? Watch our "Youtube video":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mGUfH8h_6w to get a first impression of the wide range of activities we offer.

The Mouse and the FRM II team look forward to welcoming you!

ML-Reflectometry workshop (DEVA Workshop)

ML-Reflectometry workshop The "Data Evaluation Group":https://mlz-garching.de/englisch/instruments/data-analysis.htm and the "Data Driven Discovery Group":https://www.fz-juelich.de/de/jcns/jcns-1/forschungsgruppen/data-driven-discovery are pleased to announce a Machine Learning supported - Neutron Reflectometry workshop in Garching.

This hands-on workshop will introduce both conventional and machine-learning-supported approaches to neutron reflectometry data analysis. It is intended primarily for our MLZ User community and all MLZ researchers (instrument scientists, students etc), who are interested in reflectometry and scientific machine learning.

Using prepared notebooks and simulated and experimental reflectometry data, participants will investigate posterior parameter distributions, the role of prior information, parameter correlations, and ambiguities in the inverse problem.

No advanced machine-learning experience is required. The workshop will use prepared Python notebooks and guided exercises.

Takin Workshop (DEVA Workshop)

Takin Workshop As a satellite to this year's MLZ User meeting, the "Data Evaluation Group":https://mlz-garching.de/englisch/instruments/data-analysis.html is pleased to announce a Takin Workshop for the MLZ User community and MLZ partner institutes on December 4th 2026 in Garching.

"Registration":https://indico.frm2.tum.de/event/660/ is free of cost, but mandatory. Please bring laptops with preinstalled Takin software

This workshop provides a tutorial on the triple-axis software suite "Takin":https://doi.org/10.1016/j.softx.2023.101471 (link to "GitHub":https://github.com/ILLGrenoble/takin) and its associated magnon calculation software "Magpie":https://github.com/ILLGrenoble/magpie.

Takin is a tool for planning and visualising inelastic neutron scattering experiments and for data analysis. Its main focus is resolution calculation, convolution of the instrumental resolution with dynamical structure factors and convolution fitting.

As an example for an entire workflow, we will model a magnetic system using Magpie, calculate and visualise its dispersion and spin-spin correlation function and convolute it using Takin to reproduce a measured spectrum.

21st International Conference on Positron Annihilation (Conference)

21st International Conference on Positron Annihilation We are very pleased to announce that we will be hosting the next positron conference “The 21st International Conference on Positron Annihilation” in Garching from September 10th to 15th 2028. The local organizing committee is chaired by Christoph Hugenschmidt, head of the TUM research group Physics with Positrons at the MLZ.

The ICPA series was initiated in 1965 dedicated to the study and application of positron and positronium annihilation. This triennial event attracts top researchers from physics, materials science, chemistry, and biomedical engineering to present cutting-edge developments in positron research.

ICPA-21 will showcase the latest breakthroughs in positron science, spanning from fundamental research to applied material diagnostics. This global gathering brings together a vibrant community of young researchers and established experts working at the exciting interface between antimatter and matter. Key topics include advanced positron annihilation spectroscopy, defect characterization in solids, positronium chemistry, positron beam techniques, and innovative applications in semiconductors, porous systems, and biological imaging. With special focus on emerging frontiers—like AI-assisted data analysis and antimatter studies at facilities such as CERN—ICPA-21 offers a platform for bold ideas and cross-disciplinary collaboration. By bridging theory, experiment, and application, ICPA-21 promises to be a catalyst for scientific discovery and technological innovation.
