(project no.: 05E10CJ1)
Project no.: 05E10WO1, 05E10CJ1

Description/Objective:
The European Spallation Source (ESS) to be located in Lund, Sweden, aims to become the world’s leading facility for scientific research using long-pulse neutrons. It will be funded and operated by a partnership of 17 countries in Europe and will become available for the community in 2019.

The German contribution to the Design Update Phase of the European Spallation Source (ESS) is a joint collaboration of the Helmholtz Assocication Centres in Hamburg (DESY), Karlsruhe (KIT), Jülich (FZJ), Geesthacht (HZG), Berlin (HZB) and the FRM II in Munich. The consortium is organized and managed be Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In a joint collaboration, centres of the Helmholtz Association and the FRM II aim to lead the German contribution to the design update phase of the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund. The consortium is organized and managed by Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ).

The Design Update Phase addresses all key parameters of the ESS project such as the design and the performance of the accelerator and target, the intended instrumentation suite and the scientific challenges, as well as critical instrument components. The Design Update Phase concludes with the Technical Design Report (TDR) of the future European Spallation Source (ESS).

The German partners contribute to the areas accelerator components, target, instrument concepts and critical components. Whereas the large scale facilities in Hamburg (DESY), Karlsruhe (KIT) and FZJ deal with the core components of the source, the FRM II brings its broad experience in utilizing the neutron beam for science. In collaboration with the other German neutron centres (JCNS at Forschungszentrum Jülich, BENSC at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and GEMS at Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht) new instrument designs and critical components was developed. Each workpackage is coordinated by one of the partners.

Determination and validation of nuclear data of actinides for non-destructive analysis of fissile material in waste samples by prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGAA actinides)

Proposer: Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Institut für Energie- und Klimaforschung, IEK – Nukleare Entsorgung und Reaktorsicherheit, IEK-6 (Subproject 1); Technische Universität München, FRM II (Subproject 2)
Grant Period: 08/2012 – 07/2015
Subproject 1: Project no.: 02S9052A (Jülich);
Subproject 2: Project no.: 02S9052B (TUM, FRM II)

Description/Objective:
The PGAA-Actinide is a joint project of the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Technische Universität München.
The aim of the project is to establish and support neutron laboratories at FRM II to be capable of determining high-accuracy nuclear data. The main circle of elements of interest will be the actinides, which play major roles in nuclear waste materials and other materials from nuclear industry. However, also those materials are of interest which appear in the fission product of fissile materials (like I, Tc and rare earths) or the structural materials of the containers for the fuel elements (like zr, Fe etc.). The PGAA group has already an expertise in the determination of neutron capture cross-section of elements in cold neutron beams. A fast neutron irradiation facility will also be installed at FRM II for the determination of fast neutron activation properties of these elements. A low-background counting facility will also be installed near the PGAA facility for the counting of residual activities and activated decay lines of irradiated actinides. A method has also to be developed for sample transfer and in-beam neutron activation analysis.

Verbundforschung „Erforschung kondensierter Materie an Großgeräten“ (2010 – 2013)

Components for polarization analysis

Proposer: Institut für Physikalische Chemie, Universität Göttingen (Subproject 1); Institut für Kristallographie, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (Subproject 2)
Grant period: 07/2010 – 12/2013 (project no.: 05K10PA2), 2011 – 2013 (project no.: 05K10PA2 )
Subproject 1: Project no.: 05K10PA2 (Polarization analysis and multiplexing method at the three axes spectrometer PUMA)
Subproject 2: Project no.: 05K10PA2 (Single-crystal diffractometer with polarized neutrons (POLI) at beam tube SR-9a at the FRM II)

Description/Objective (Subproject 1):
The Multianalyser-Multidetector system of PUMA provides the unique opportunity to measure both polarization components of neutrons scattered by a sample simultaneously using a special combination of polarisers (deflectors). Besides the obvious measuring time saving, this option will be especially useful for kinetic experiments, since spin-flip and nonspin-flip scattering can be measured at exactly the same experimental conditions. A multilayer stacks (deflectors) consisting of polarizing supermirrors on Si-wafer substrate (m=4.5) will be used as polarizers. They will be oriented in the scattered beam at critical angle θc (-θc), so that the neutrons polarized in parallel direction (↑) will be reflected, whereas neutrons with spin down polarization will be transmitted. Both components will be reflected by different analyzers of the Multianalyzer system of PUMA and delivered to corresponding detectors.

Aktiv kompensierter Hochfeldmagnet für die Neutronenstreuung

KOMPASS - Inelastic scattering cold neutron triple-axis-spectrometer

Proposer: University of Cologne – Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences – Department of Physics II
Partner: TUM/FRM II
Grant period: 07/2010 – 06/2013
Project no.: 05KN7PK1 & 05K10PK1

Description/Objective:
The KOMPASS-Project is a joint project of the University of Cologne and the Technische Universität München. The aim of the project is to build a new, compact, cold neutron triple-axis-spectrometer for experiments using polarized neutrons and neutron polarimetry. Complementary to the other triple-axis-spectrometers at the FRM II – namely PANDA, PUMA and TRISP – the KOMPASS spectrometer shall be designed to work exclusively with polarized neutrons and to provide a zero-field 3D spherical polarization analysis. A key aspect of the project is therefore the development of an optimized guide design, which provides a high flux of polarized neutrons and superior resolution at a small sample volume.
The final instrument, operational in 2013, thus will be dedicated to study all types of (weak) magnetic ordering and excitations. Typical scientific applications will include, for instance, investigations of quantum effects associated with magnetic excitations, multiferroic and magneto-electric materials, high-Tc- superconductors and itinerant magnetic systems.

Joint project NanoSOFT: Surface sensitive neutron scattering on bio-functional interfaces at REFSANS at FRM II

Proposer: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München – Fakultät für Physik – Lehrstuhl für Experimentalphysik
Grant Period: 10/2010 – 06/2013
Subproject 3: Project no.: 05K10WM1

Description/Objective:
Within the research initiative NANOSOFT we employ neutron techniques to study soft matter systems, in particular biointerfaces. For this purpose we develop tethered lipid bilayers which allow studying of the molecular mechanism of membrane-protein interactions by neutron techniques. In order to be able to perform neutron measurements on such systems, a dedicated sample environment is designed, which provides complementary access to optical microscopy. With this new setup, we study the influence of synuclein, a protein which is involved in Parkinson’s disease, on the structure of anionic lipid membranes. Experiments are performed at REFSANS (operated by GEMS) at the MLZ.
