Structure and interfacial properties of patchy nanoparticles

Interfaces, specifically solid-liquid interfaces, play important roles in many fields of science. For example, protein functions rely largely on its complex surface structure, which is composed of nano-scale hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. The same goes with nanotechnology, much work on self-assembly, molecular recognition, catalysis, electrochemistry and numerous other applications depends on the nanostructures of interfaces. However, to date, the interfacial structure-property relationships of these nanostructures are poorly understood.

In this talk, I will present our studies on the surface structures and related interfacial properties of a type of patchy nanoparticle, i.e. mixed monolayer protected gold nanoparticles. I will show how small angle neutron scattering together with other techniques could be used to characterize and control the morphology of the mixed ligand shell of nanoparticles. Furthermore, our recent results on how patchy nanostructures determine the interfacial energy and self-assembly behavior of nanoparticles will be discussed.
